Posture of the Month: Savasana

It’s the end of the standing series and now you can say, “Ahh… Savasana.”     For now,  just a couple of thoughts.   During the standing series we are opening our muscles, ligaments and skeletal system.  Now savasana gives us a chance to relax all the muscles that we have been stretching and moving.  This will get us ready to move deeper into the internal organs during the floor postures.   There is much much more that can and will be said about savasana.  We will go further in depth at the end of the floor series.

It’s a Boy (again!)

Well, after a long 9 months, and an even longer 24 hours, Sheldon and I are so excited to welcome baby Ethan Nashir Kassam into this world and into our hearts! I have to say, I don’t think anything or anyone could have truly prepared me for childbirth, it was definitely the most difficult thing I have ever done. At times I honestly did not think I was even capable of getting through it, but of course within moments of seeing my little guy I knew it was worth it and that I would (and could) do it again.

People have asked me if I think my yoga practice helped me throughout the labour process, and I have to say that in the moment, it didn’t really come into play, other than a few moments of reminding myself to breathe. Now that it has been a few weeks and I have had time to reflect, however, I do see the parallels between the two, even if it is just the realization that we are so much stronger and capable than we give ourselves credit for. As Bikram likes to say, would you rather suffer for 90 minutes or 90 years? In the moment, we may be a bit miserable, but it is for the lifelong reward that we endure that suffering. I guess it’s not a coincidence that I was pushing for 90 minutes!

I am excited to be back at the studio and see all of your smiling happy faces, and for everyone to meet Ethan, I know these 2 babes will have an amazing second home and extended family at the studio!

Spring is here and change is in the air!
Change is sometimes difficult to accept, but it is perhaps one of life’s most fascinating occurrences to witness and experience.  Regardless of the degree, change facilitates growth, allows us to evolve, and hopefully leads to transparent self-reflection.  One of the biggest changes I have been struggling with since Colter’s arrival is balancing home life and operating the studio; consequently, I have come to understand what the “real” struggle is for all of you as students.  Admittedly, I took practicing for granted as it was always available to me with realistically no other commitments to balance; however, for most of you, that balance may be career vs family, family vs volunteering, financial sustainability vs time… either way it is a struggle to find time for everything and, unfortunately, we can end up un-necessarily competing against ourselves.  As such, we want practicing at BYV to be part of the solution to the “real” struggle.
The best investment you can make… is in YOU!
As a new mom and studio owner, I am quickly realizing simplicity is the most effective way to achieve balance.  Consequently, we are going back to appreciating why we exist, such that BYV is a pure Bikram Yoga studio, not a retail outlet and, therefore, our Yoga will no longer be offered “on sale” or “discounted”.   Effective Mar 5th, we are implementing a simplified, transparent pricing structure – we want our prices to be fair and equitable to all demographics so we can sustainably perpetuate BYV.  Essentially, from a cost of practicing perspective, we will no longer incentify practicing at BYV based on age, income level, familial status etc and, instead, we want to educate BYV students on the cost per class perspective – we hope this will provide clarity to understanding just how affordable practicing at BYV really is based on each student’s desired level of commitment.  Key changes you will also notice and appreciate is the reduction of our yearly membership prices and return of the 3 and 6 month memberships.   The benefits of Perkville will similarly be applicable to only retail items.  We believe so strongly in the benefits of practicing our Yoga that the premise behind our new pricing structure is to make practicing at BYV increasingly more affordable, sustainable, and flexible so you can also achieve your balance.
We live in an exceptionally beautiful part of the world and are envied by so many, but how many of us actually get to enjoy the summer and lakes?  Sometimes we envy the tourists and visitors because they get to enjoy the Okanagan more than we do.  Looking back, we have made numerous attempts at encouraging students to maintain a consistent practice during the summer with challenges etc, however, we understand how difficult it is to find time to practice during the summer; in all honesty, it is sometimes equally difficult finding the desire to teach – as mentioned above, we all experience the struggle to find that balance, which is why we have made the decision to augment our class times this summer and be more seasonally aware.  We hope this will simplify achieving the balance between Yoga and being on the beach!

Posture of the Month: Toe Stand (Padangustasana)

Here we are now at the last posture of the standing series – Toe Stand.  Sometimes fear will rise as a new student when first learning this posture.  Once you realize though that there is nothing to fear, progress will happen very quickly. This posture is so great for the knees and hips.  Especially building strength in the knees – one of the hardest parts of the body to strengthen.  And for those that decide to learn the advance series of Bikram Yoga, this posture will help in lotus pose.
To learn this posture, simply start in a standing position.  Find a spot three to four feet in front of you on the floor – and keep your focus on that one spot.   Bring your foot up like tree pose, keep your standing leg straight, then bend over until your hands touch the floor.  It is best to have your hands a little forward so you can put your weight in the hands.  With the weight on the hands begin to sit down on your heel as you balance on your toes.   Remember to keep looking on that one spot on the floor.  If you look in the mirror there is a greater tendency to loose your balance.   Once you are sitting on your heel bring your hands back to the side of the hips.  At first just bring your left hand up – then as you keep your balance – bring your right hand up.  Before you know it, you will be balancing on your toe.

LAURA: “I wanted to lose weight and become more flexible.”

LAURA: “Yes I still want to become more flexible but I am no longer so concerned with weight loss.”
BYV: What inspired you to start taking class?
LAURA: “I love the idea of healing from the inside out.”
BYV: What benefits did you notice right away from practice?
LAURA: “I felt a sense of peace and self acceptance I have never felt.”

LAURA: “After the first month my doctor took me off of my blood pressure medication.”
BYV: What is that motivates you to get your toes on the line as frequently as possible?
LAURA: “I know how fabulous I’m going to feel for the rest of the day!”
BYV: Have you used Bikram‘s Yoga as a form of therapy or rehabilitation?
LAURA: “For over 15 years I could not kneel without extreme pain, after 5 months of practice I can kneel without pain and no longer worry about having to have surgery.”
BYV: What is your favourite posture and why? 
LAURA: “Savasana … I love knowing so much healing is happening with my mind, body and spirit in this posture.”
BYV: What would you suggest to a new student looking to expand their practice? Were there things that have helped you along the way? 
LAURA: “Show up … be kind to yourself and don’t give up . And ask for help, the instructors are amazing!”
BYV: Have you ever felt like running out of the room? If so, what kept you from acting on it? 
LAURA: “Once. I calmed myself by practicing my breathing.”

LAURA: “Coming 4-5 times a week!”

It’s a boy!

It is with great joy that Clint and I would like to introduce our beautiful baby boy Colter.  Colter will be frequently joining me as I transition back to teaching and managing the studio; he is very much looking forward to meeting all the voices he heard over the past 9 months and I promise you will instantly fall in love!
I know a lot of you have been asking and wondering if yogahad any impact during labour?  Did the practice help?  Was it anything like being in the torture chamber for 90 minutes?  Interestingly, some women have walked out of the room claiming class to be more difficult than giving birth or in some cases, analogous to.  So here is my take on all that:
 They are definitely two completely different experiences, however, the true comparison is in the mind and how we control it or rather choose to control it.  In my experience, the key difference between child birth and our yoga practice relates to choice.  With child birth we simply do not have a choice, one way or another the baby is coming out so we are literally forced to go to that place in our minds that will sustain our focus on labour.  Undoubtedly, the time I have spent in the hot room was monumental in elevating me during labour; as a matter of fact, I thought about our yoga practice over 90% of the time, specifically focusing on maintaining a slow steady breath.  Conversely, in thehot room we have that choice to try, to give up, to push ourselves until we find that mysterious extra strength.  Similarly, we have that conscious choice to learn stillness in the mind or allow all the other stuff to take over – ultimately, we have the choice to show up for ourselves.  
We all know that doing more yoga provides obvious benefits such as increased energy, strength, and flexibility; however, never lose awareness of the less obvious, perhaps subtle, benefits that we infrequently utilize – by that I mean yogaprepares us to delve in to the unknown depths of our minds so we can realize our untapped potential during life’s challenges (birth, healing, recovery).  Yoga helps manage time and prioritize what is important to us.  Yoga allows us to live a happier, healthier life.
As I reflect back and look forward I am forever grateful for all of you and the community we have a BYV.  I can’t wait to get back in the room with you (which will be very very soon)!  I am already realizing how important self care really is with having this baby and it’s challenging to find time for myself, but I am reminded that it’s not about finding the time it’s about making the time.

Posture of the Month: Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose

Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee is the 10th posture in the Bikram series.  Bikram likes to call this a combination of balancing stick and rabbit pose.   It really is an easy pose on it’s own – yet right after triangle it can seem quite challenging.  Of course since this is Bikram Yoga, it’s supposed to be challenging.
A few things to remember.  If the forehead and knee are not touching, the posture has not begun.   This is essentially to get the proper compression on the internal organs and on the thyroid.  Often times the hips can initially be twisted, so make sure that you apply weight to the front leg to get both hips level.
Some of the benefits of this posture include slimming of the abdomen, waistline, hips buttocks and upper thighs.  Also with the help of the pituitary gland, the thyroid and para-thyroid glands this posture helps to balance the calcium in the body.

Silent Auction Fundraiser for Rory Murtland

This year we are happy to announce BYV will be holding a silent auction in honour of this fabulous little boy. Rory turned 1 on August 6th. Literally days later he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer. Rory has several tumours in his head. The doctors have also found there is cancer in his bones, limbs and throughout his entire body. The main tumour is located in his abdomen. Rory has already lost vision in his right eye due to a tumour sitting behind it.
Rory’s mom, Daylene has packed up their life in the Okanagan and remains with Rory in Vancouver in the care of the children’s hospital. They are currently residing in the Ronald McDonald house where they will remain for up to a year while Rory undergoes chemotherapy, and possibly surgery and or radiation depending on how the cancer responds to the chemo. The silent auction will be held at our studio onNovember 21st. 100% of the proceeds will be going to Rory and his family. Mark your calendars and be sure to come out and support Rory and his family.

Posture of the Month: Triangle

Can you believe how much your thigh burns in this posture?  Or how hard it is to keep the straight leg from slipping?   Then the teacher seems to keep holding this posture forever.  What’s a yogi to do?  Ah, the sweet sensation of stretching and strength with sweat running down your body.

Ok…  this posture is really much simplier than it seems some time.   So a couple tips to remember.   Always make sure that your heels are exactly in one line.  This creates the base of the foundation that you are creating.  Then when you are bending your knee- don’t stop until you are all the way down – yes make sure you feel your thigh burning.   Contiue to keep your straight leg – straight and strong.   Now your total foundation is in place.  Then you simply turn your arms making sure that the elbow is at the knee and the fingers are stretching between the big and second toe – all the while looking up while stretching your arms in two different directions.  Now what?  It’s simple – breathe and think stillness.   That’s it.  Enjoy..!!

Star Student Kees

hella-kess-family-Kees 217I am not a “Star” because I live in a family with two Olympians and two almost Olympians.  Both my wife and oldest son are Olympic Swimmers and my youngest son and his wife participated in the 2000 Olympic Swimming Trials but didn’t make the Sydney Team by a hair’s breath.  Also, our 9 year old grandson scores half of all the goals in his soccer and lacrosse teams and can run 5 km in 20 minutes!  Hallo! My wife Hella is one of the fastest women swimmers of her age in the world ….  As you can surmise, that all results in me being the family underdog even though I won Silver Medals in my age-group in two different Masters Swimming World Championships.  No, I don’t feel I’m a Star.

I am just a 67 year old man who loves to be active, loves to be in nature, loves the social life that comes with doing things together with other people.  My body is worn out from sixty years of cycling, plus forty-five years of running, plus forty years of swimming, plus thirty years of cross country skiing and then 15 years of yoga.  Between 1981 and 2005 I competed in several triathlons and 10 km runs plus a marathon every single year.  At Provincial, National and World level.  After some, what? 170?, cumulative years of pursuing all these competitive sports, my muscles and joints ache. As the song of Leonard Cohen goes:
 “I ache in the places where I used to have fun …”
My wife  started Bikram already twenty years ago and after BYV started up she advised me to try it.  I am telling you my story because after starting bikram in December 2010 in Vernon, I felt 10 years younger. I could do things again that I couldn’t do anymore because of my ageing.  Especially the balancing on one leg and the first few floor positions.  I don’t feel a bikram student:  I AM a yogi!  Bikram is not the only thing I do but it is the glue that allows me to do all these other things.  To live life more fully.  I love our life in Vernon because of its people, its nature, its weather and the Bikram community.
Going to Bikram is part of my routine.  I like the atmosphere in the room – the feeling of being challenged.  I value and am thankful for what it does for me: making it easier to go about the rest of my daily life.

BYV: how long have you been practicing Bikram yoga, did you start at BYV or somewhere else?

Aims: Its been six years I began my journey with Bikram yoga in Kelowna and then fell blissfully in love with BYV the second I walked thru the door five years ago!

BYV: What inspired you to begin taking class?

Aims: I found myself in a place where I had forgotten that perfect health was our natural state, I needed a practice that could help me realign with the healthiest, most vital aspects of myself in an environment where I could trust the teachers to guide me thorough healing safely . That way I could get busy reconnecting to my body in a loving way…no matter how painful that process may be!!

I had always been invested in health and yoga and when I looked in the mirror I felt hypocritical and disappointed in my body…not ground for healthy growth. I needed a practice that could guide me back to center and help me squeeze and wring and stretch the yucky stuff out so that there was room for the good stuff to shine through. At the time I had 2 babies one year apart in age so I couldn’t mess around, I had to go for the best, most efficient body/mind/spirit hit possible. I also had some pretty funky stuff going on with my body so I couldn’t compromise on the level of training the teacher had, I needed to trust that I wouldn’t further damage myself with my workout routine…Bikrams 26/2 was the only way to go.

BYV: What benefits did you notice right away from practicing?

Aims: A sense of victory every time I left the room, no matter how difficult the class. That sense of accomplishment and victorious juju has grown and shifted over the years to become an unshakeable sense of self respect…I mean who could ever NOT respect themselves after finishing that class!!

I also noticed immediately that my parenting and approach to life were benefiting greatly. Suddenly I didn’t feel like I was being controlled by the events around me and my reactions to them, the more I

practiced the better my emotional equilibrium and mindfulness became.

BYV: what long term benefits have you experienced?

Aims: My body, mind and spirit have all cultivated strength ,flexibility and presence with every passing year I spend as a devotee to this practice. I have healed and recovered in so many ways physically that I cannot even begin to list them here, they are “old stories” thanks to this practice and there are so many that it kind of blows me away…I must have felt SO awful all of the time!!

I now have the unshakeable belief that as long as I continue to “show up” that my body will continue to heal and my life will flourish in ways I can’t even yet imagine!

BYV: What motivates you to get your toes on the line as frequently as possible?

Aims: Everything is better when I do!! I mean EVERYTHING!!!

My art, my relationships, my level of gratitude, my meditation practice, the way I nourish myself and others, my whole world shifts into a brighter more delightful space when I get into the hot room as often as possible. And when I am lacking in motivation and trying to talk myself out of showing up I just imagine Bikram yelling “no choice!!” and then I can’t help but get my ace in there!!

BYV: Have you used Bikrams yoga as a form of therapy or rehabilitation?

Aims: Yes, absolutely. I use it to manage hashimotos thyroiditis and have successfully stopped taking daily medication for ADHD, hypothyroid and back pain. I am also in the process of losing 100lbs (a by-product of the hashimotos ) and love that even though I still have 75 lbs to go, I KNOW that I am strong and fit on the inside underneath the excess.

BYV: What is your favorite posture and why?

Aims: All of them…they are all like little teachers. Some are nasty and bossy like awkward pose, and others are blissful and loving like savasana. Either way, I feel like they ALL teach me something new about my body and life every time I hit the mat.

BYV: What would you suggest to a new student looking to expand their practice?

Aims: A few things, the first is to say “thank you” for everything that comes up in the room…every little pain and creak and all of the delicious good feelings too! The next is to ask for help…our teachers are outstanding and incredibly supportive, they see things we absolutely do not notice about ourselves…sometimes its as simple as them reminding you to “remember to breathe” or “activate your inner thigh” If you don’t want to ask for help then get your hands on either of Bikrams books, not only is he hysterical and passionate but the insights into posture details are supremely helpful.

BYV: Have you ever felt like running out of the room? If so, what kept you from acting on it?

Aims: YES!! Omg, I had NO idea how intensely strong my negative mind was until I started this practice!! How I avoid leaving the room is to actually listen to what my mind is telling me and 9times out of 10 it is positively nonsense!! When I realise that my mind is telling me that I have to leave or my “head will blow up” or “ I will die of exhaustion” it makes it way easier to have a little chuckle, take a deep breath and tell it to relax!!

Specific tools that have helped me NOT run are: mantras, visualizations, deep breathing, and honestly just looking around the room at all of the people who were courageous enough to just show up and try.

BYV: We would love to hear something personal about you and your yoga…

Aims: My yoga practice is the same as my relationship to art in so many ways!! Both are practices which teach new lessons every day (and NEVER the ones you expect them to be!), both require dedication, focus, determination and trust. On my mat or at the canvas I am only able to do what I can based on the skills I have cultivated through patience, presence, commitment and humility. And the only way to truly move forward is to put in the time, trust what you have been taught and surrender wholeheartedly to the process.

My experience in the hot room changed completely when I noticed these similarities. I was sprawled out like a starfish on my mat, sweating from places I didn’t know sweat came from (seriously, I had NO idea that our shins sweat until I tried putting my head on my knee!!) feeling SUPER sorry for myself when I thought “I wish I had the same attitude about yoga as I do about art…I would never just give up and sulk under ANY circumstances where I was creating…I would just step by step move through the suck until I mastered the skill”…and voila!! I had to stop trying to be a master and just devote myself to being a lifelong student, the exact same way I approach art. A humble student attitude to kill the ego trip and I was set!

Now I enter the hot room grateful. Grateful that I have legs to walk in on. Grateful for my SUPER patient teachers and their willingness to repeat the same thing every day so that I can remedy all that ails me!! Grateful for the community of people who gather silently in the hottest room in Vernon to sweat their tails off together!! Grateful for a practice that has rekindled my love for one of the oldest, most beautiful modalities of healing and all of the brilliant teachings and offerings that come with it. And grateful to the core for a home away from home where I cross paths with people, many of whom whose names I don’t even know, but for whom I have the utmost of respect….oh, and sometimes I get to color on the walls, which is like icing on the world’s most delicious cake!

Good day fellow yogis,

I began Bikram yoga about a year and a half ago.  I come because I looove yoga and I love to sweat!  It removes some of the stress and tension I’ve accumulated throughout the day so that when it’s all done I feel more peaceful.

I enjoy this specific yoga community because Dionne, and formerly Adam, have created a caring, welcoming space where we can all hang loose and be ourselves if we choose to.  I look forward to seeing the different teachers and hearing about how things are going.  I enjoy everyone’s uniqueness… such as how Dionne is now becoming less strict, Tannis helping me open my heart chakra with her adjustments, Diane telling us to let go, Adam telling us “just breathe and tell your body what to do” as well as the guest teacher’s “May the force be with you!” My favourite part about this practice is Disco yoga.  I am grateful to be part of this fun loving and caring community!

Joseph Encinia in Vernon July 14th

Born and raised in Dallas, TX. Joseph started practicing Bikram Yoga in May 2005. Bikram Yoga is one the best things he has ever done for himself. It has truly changed his life. Mentally, it has given Joseph more peace with himself and the world around him; physically, it has taught him how his body could do things he never dreamed it could do.

Joseph hasn’t always been very healthy. Diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at a young age (which affected the majority of the left side of his body), Joseph spent years in and out of the hospital trying to rehabilitate and strengthen his joints and muscles. After a major knee surgery, Joseph taught himself how to deal with the discomfort and move on. As a result, his physical activities were limited and he was consistently taking pain medication. Then, at the age of thirteen, quite unexpectedly, Joseph had a heart attack. The causes are unknown, but most likely a side effect of arthritis medication; regardless, it made a tremendous impact.

One day Joseph decided to explore forms of exercise to regain control of my health. After a long journey, he discovered Bikram Yoga. Joseph simply expected a physical workout-he found much more than that. Joseph has transformed. He no longer suffers from constant pain. He has lost 50 pounds and developed lean muscle mass. He can contort his body into positions he never thought possible. He has gained a peace of mind he previously never knew existed.  Joseph has transcended many limitations within himself – mentally, physically and emotionally. He is accomplishing things he once thought impossible.

Taking his practice to the next level, Joseph began to compete in the Asana Championships. After four years of hard work, in 2009 he placed first in the US and second in the world – now current 3 time National Champion and 2011 Male International Asana Champion. Joseph has learned to focus on the tasks at hand and live in peace with himself and the world around him. To Joseph this is the gift of yoga. The gift which he has the responsibility to share for the rest of his life.

Joseph teaches full time and enjoys travel, philosophy, and playing flamenco guitar. Joseph has toured to over 40 schools nationwide in the U.S., taught for 10 months at Bikram’s first Indian school in Mumbai and has served as a full-time staff member of Bikram’s Teacher Training.

Question and Answer Class with Ida Ripley

Join us on Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7 for a special Q&A class taught by Ida Ripley. This Q&A will replace the 7pm class normally held at this time. Tickets are only $25, so be sure to reserve your spot at the studio today! Here is a bit more about Ida and what to expect in the class.

Ida Ripley is originally from Victoria, BC, but is a yogi of the world. She began practicing Bikram yoga in 2000 and teaching in 2003.  She has traveled to many corners of the world, has taught in Hong Kong, Korea, India, Peru and across Canada and the United States. She is one of few teachers in the world, and the only teacher in Canada, who is sanctioned by Bikram to lead Bikram yoga seminars.

Ida is the 5 time Western Canadian Hatha Yoga Champion, and 2009 2nd place international champion. Though her years of competition and teaching, Ida has spent extensive time with Bikram, Rajashree and many of Bikram’s esteemed teachers.

Ida teaches at the teacher training sessions, as well as demonstrates at many of Bikram’s advanced seminars; she has been qualified to lead the advanced series since 2007.  She has a very clear and concise teaching style, and emphasizes demonstration and discussion, paired with one-on-one assistance in her seminars to help students attain a deeper understanding of the Bikram series.

Ida brings energy and enthusiasm to her seminars and classes. She teaches to all levels. Beginners will learn the simplicity and key components of the postures, and more advanced students will learn to delve deeper into their practice through a greater understanding of precision and execution.

In a Q and A class, Ida will take extra time to go over finer points of postures by using demonstration and extra explanation. The class is longer than a regular 90 minute class (can run to 2 hours), as it is filled with more in-depth details and assistance on the beginner’s series. The class is for all levels, beginners welcome! No matter what the level of your practice or how long you’ve been at it, you’ll be able to find breakthroughs in your practice with Ida.

Judging from the number of yoga mats I’ve seen toted around Manhattan in the last 15 years, I’m pretty sure I was the last person on the island to try it. My relationship with the practice started about six months ago, and I must admit, I fell for it – and hard. I was amazed at the changes it was effecting in my body, and even better, my mind. But the science nerd/Western medicine part of me wondered how, exactly, it was doing this. I could wager some guesses based on what I know about the body, but wanted to talk to some people who actually study this stuff for a living.

Like a crazy porno film,  (not that I would know!) there we were half-naked laying side by side on the floor, arms and legs splayed to our sides,  soaking wet with sweat and panting like dogs… but through our noses yoga-style.

Yes indeed friends we’ve ventured into the world of Bikram Yoga together.

The teacher wants me to make a Japanese ham sandwich. To my knowledge, I’ve never seen a Japanese ham sandwich, but as I understand it, I’m to stand bent with my face to my shins and chest to my thighs in perfect vertical union—I am the sandwich.

I would say I look more like a jelly roll. My flabby abdomen won’t let my forehead anywhere near my knees, and my legs tremble as I try contorting myself into a position my body neither recognizes nor endorses. The goal is to concentrate on stretching and breathing, but I’m fixating on my unpedicured toenails. And the neon paleness of my legs. And the fact that I probably should have shaved.

An inspirational writer finds inspiration in a Bikram class

LAHAINA – “He walked in the door on October 1, 2005 and said he wanted to try doing yoga for 40 days,” said Mary Katharine Wall, owner of Bikram Yoga in Lahaina.
“His face was familiar but I didn’t really know who he was. I asked him if he knew what he was getting himself into, and he said he was willing to find out.”
That was two years ago!

She said if he was going to take her yoga classes, she was going to read his books.
“The next day he brought in his book, ’The Power of Intention,’ and several of his other books. They have completely changed the way I look at life. I guess it was serendipity that brought him to my class that day,” Wall said.

The man she is referring to is Dr. Wayne Dyer, world-renowned self-help advocate, author, inspirational lecturer and resident of Maui.
His 1976 book “Your Erroneous Zones” sold over 30 million copies and is one of the best-selling books of all time. He has written more than 30 inspirational books.
“I had been an avid runner from 1976 to 1998 and I was running between eight and 15 miles a day. Then I would go and play tennis for a few hours,” said Dr. Dyer.

“I knew my days of running would have to come to an end because I was living with chronic back pain. The doctor said I would also need knee surgery.”
He said that he heard different things about yoga through the years.
“My body was such a mess, I knew I had to do something. The first day of doing yoga at MK’s (as she is affectionately known) Bikram’s studio, I got through half

of it, but I kept coming back, and after 40 days I was completely hooked. I don’t know where I would be right now without doing yoga the last two years,” he concluded.
Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India. He was born in Calcutta, India, in 1946 and began practicing yoga at the age of four.
He taught yoga to Indira Gandhi at the tender age of 11, and now has more than 500 studios all over the world.

MK took over the ownership of the studio in December 2004.
“I heard it was on the verge of closing, so I moved to Maui and gave it some ’TLC’ and brought it back to life,” she said with a smile on her face.
The studio is heated to relax the muscles and help in healing and detoxing the body.
Some of the benefits of doing yoga are: reducing stress, increasing flexibility, increasing energy, increasing muscle tone, lowering blood pressure, losing weight, improving concentration and preventing injury and disease.
“Most people come to yoga to fix an injury to their back or if they have a knee problem. After doing yoga for a while, they find there are other benefits, such as sleeping better, eating better, and just an overall feeling of well being,” said MK.

“I’m an inch taller since I started doing yoga because it stretches the spine. It doesn’t just teach us to be flexible in our physical world, but to be flexible in our thinking and keeps us balanced. Because I am a public speaker, I first noticed a difference in my mind. I started thinking better and my lecturing was more focused. I didn’t have to take notes on what I was going to say. I also noticed I was sleeping better,” said Dr. Dyer.

He continued to say that practicing yoga works every part of your body – not just the outer part, but the inner parts like your thyroid, pituitary gland, and your digestive system.
“Not only am I doing this interview because I want this business to thrive, but also to inform the people of Maui of all the benefits of yoga and how it can improve the quality of life. There is a miracle waiting for you in that hot room,” he concluded with a smile.

Do you walk down the street and every couple of steps have to remind yourself to breathe?  Not usually, so why is it that when we are struggling in the hot room our first reaction is to hold our breath! Most of us breathe without much thought outside of the hot room.  In the hot room however we find one of the hardest things to do is just breathe!  Once we learn to control our breath in the class all of a sudden being in the room seems that much more tolerable!  So stand tall, keep your chin up and remember to breathe!  Keep reading and find out more to the importance of breathing!
